A heartbreaking scenario played out at the veterinary clinic in Diamana Road this morning (Monday) as a dog suffering from cancer had to be put to sleep.
The black, male, crossbreed dog was riddled with cancer, which had even spread to its testicles. This had resulted in two, huge, unsightly sores underneath its tail.
According to the Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL), the owner of the dog took too long to seek help and so nothing could be done to save the suffering animal. Annamarie from the AACL added that the cancer the dog was afflicted with could’ve been treated effectively if picked up a lot earlier.
An AACL member living in the Colenso area brought the animal to the veterinary clinic, but there was nothing the clinic could do but humanely put the animal down and end the pain it was in. “If the owner had come earlier, the dog could’ve been helped, as this cancer can be cured,” explained Annamarie.
The dog was found in a rural settlement near Colenso. The man who owned the dog is evidently very poor and could not afford to get into town, let alone pay expensive vet bills.
The AACL would like to appeal to the community via the Ladysmith Gazette to get help for their pets immediately if they see or suspect that something is wrong. That could be the difference between life and death. In addition, serious charges can be laid against individuals who are deemed to have neglected an animal that is clearly sick and in a great deal of pain. In this case, no charges will be laid.
