Have you ever had that horrible feeling, a few days after payday? That moment when your realise you just got your salary last week, and now more than 70 percent of it is gone?
Loan repayments, car installments, utility bills, medical aid and cell phone bills. It all adds up.
But would you feel differently if your money was all laid out on the coffee table in front of you, and you watched it physically get less and less?
The ‘One Rand Man’ is on a journey of preservation in the month of July. Having made the cover of a number of the top financial publications in the country, he is taking national savings month to the next level.
He has had his entire salary paid to him in one Rand coins. Now, after an arduous counting process, he is living day to day, paying his bills, buying drinks and living life, one Rand at a time.
His journey is being documented in weekly episodes, released every Saturday. According to this Tweet, he is already feeling the pressure:
“It’s hard to say yet, @financeblogza. I have already noticed that I don’t buy things that I would normally, because it’s so much hassle.”
With his bank cards securely locked in a safe, for which he does not have a key, the One Rand Man is soldiering on.
What will happen to his host of coins? Is this social experiment the greatest saving awareness advert ever?
