Stink over broken toilets

'R100 000 has been allocated by the municipality to revamp the toilets.'

The toilets at the Glencoe taxi rank have been ‘out of order’ for over a year, and the issue is causing a stink for passengers, taxi drivers and vendors.
A committee, representative of taxi drivers using the rank, has been complaining to the municipality for months, but still the toilets have not been repaired.
Eventually, in May, the municipality installed two portable toilets as a temporary solution.
However, commuters complained that the chemical toilets were also used by patrons of a nearby shebeen, who leave the toilets in a mess. The toilets are left unlocked at night. Again an overpowering stench became apparent.
Patrick Ndlovu, Senior Acting Manager for Sanitation at the Endumeni Municipality, said that there is going to be change made to the toilets as soon as he gets the go-ahead from Council.
He said an amount of R100 000 has been allocated to revamp the toilets. The revamping includes putting up the low-pan toilets (‘normal’ toilets), as the ones mentioned above are squat toilets (these are merely a hole on the ground). These types of toilets have been viewed as an insult to commuters and taxi drivers.
Mr Nhlapho, a taxi queue marshall at the rank, said he wishes the municipality could assist with the issue because they, as the people who work at the site on a daily basis, are now exposed to diseases such as TB.
He said they are now forced to use the toilets at the Glencoe Shell garage, which are situated further down the road, as there is no one taking care of the portable toilets either.
Mr Ndlovu said a tender would be advertised for the revamping of these toilets.
He also mentioned that there is going to be a caretaker allocated to monitor the toilets in future.
