Roadblock horrors for motorists

Motorists have been handcuffed and ordered to pay up immediately

Motorists have reacted angrily to the ‘rolling roadblock’ that has operated at the entrance to Dundee for the past three days.

The Courier has been inundated by horror stories of women and men being handcuffed, forced to leave their cars behind and taken to the police station to pay their outstanding road traffic fines.

Some offenders say they were escorted to ATMs by traffic police to draw money while others had friends and work colleagues rushing over with money.

One woman had to pay R5 000 in outstanding fines while a man had to call a work colleague and ask him to bring R300 for an outstanding seat belt offence.

The operation is being run by the RTI.  Offenders are loaded up in a minibus and taken to the police station.  However, the mini bus only leaves when it is full and motorists have complained of missing business appointments.

Watch out for updates for a response from the RTI.
