Lions Club recycle for sight

As the year draws to a close, the Newcastle Lions Club introduces Lions ‘Recycle for Sight’ programme. The Lions Club requests the community to donate unwanted prescription glasses and non-prescription sunglasses to the programme.

Identifying a need within the community, the aim of the initiative is to prepare and distribute the glasses locally and in areas where eye care is unaffordable and often inaccessible. “We need everyone to donate their used eyeglasses.

In most developing countries, an eye exam can cost as much as a month’s wages and a single optometrist may serve a community of hundreds of thousands of people,” said Club President, Barbara Elliott.

The donated glasses will be sent to a regional Lions Club spectacle recycling centre where they will be cleaned, categorised by prescription and prepared for distribution.

To donate your used glasses and sunglasses, place them in the specially marked Lions ‘Recycle For Sight’ collection boxes in the following locations: Davida van der Merwe Optometrists (Amajuba Mall), Torga Optical (Newcastle Mall) and Pick n Pay (Hutten Heights and Pioneer Park).
