Enhanced security and law enforcement are at the forefront of the municipality’s decision to introduce pay and park meters. But your input is crucial to take the next step and you can voice your opinion at a public participation meeting on Tuesday, October 28.

Umtshezi Municipality has drawn up a plan that they think will improve security while enforcing traffic regulations in the central business district (CBD). This concern was raised during the Mayoral Imbizos, where residents complained about theft from motor vehicles and a lack of parking spaces due to an increased volume of traffic in the CBD. To address these concerns, the municipality devised a plan that would include a service provider, who will employ locals to monitor traffic in the CBD, these individuals known as parking meter maids, will keep tabs on vehicles in their jurisdiction.

During an interview with a reporter from the Estcourt News, Corporate Services Director Hans Chotoo explained that staff will also be equipped to identify motorists with outstanding traffic fines.
He explained that the municipality will not incur any costs but will instead benefit with employment offered to locals only. “The first step in this process is public participation and we are inviting the public to a meeting on Tuesday, October 28 at 5.30pm at the Estcourt Town Hall. All businesses and community members are invited to attend and share their input,” commented Mr Chotoo.
