Toilet revamp ‘flowing’ ahead

R100 000 was allocated from this year's budget to commence with the revamping of the Glencoe town public toilets.

All is ‘flowing ahead’ at the Glencoe taxi rank, after the completion of the upgrading of the public restrooms from ‘pit toilets’ to a modernised flushing system. The public can make use of the facilities free of charge.
It has been close on ten years since the municipality was first requested to allocate funds to revamp the toilets at the taxi rank. Finally R100 000 was allocated from this year’s budget to commence with the work.
Rajin Dubree (Waste Management Officer) and Patrick Ndlovu (Assistant Manager for Sanitation) officially opened the facilities a few weeks ago.
They explained that due to previous vandalism taking place, the toilets will be locked outside of certain operating hours. Hours allocated for public to use the facilities are from 7:30am to 4:25pm, Monday to Friday. On Saturdays they will be open from 8am to 2pm. On Sundays and public holidays the restrooms will be off limits.
Endumeni Waste Management Officer Rajin Dubree said, “The reason we have allocated such times for the use of these toilets is to control the scourge of vandalism. The municipality will cater for the maintenance of the facilities, including providing hygiene products such as toilets rolls and soap.”
Contractor Reshen Singh, Manager of Lapha Trading Enterprise (the company awarded the tender for the upgrades) indicated that while working on the system they found refuse such as cans, stones and even clothes in the reticulation pipelines of the old pit toilets.
Funds remaining after the completion of the project will be allocated to the upgrading of the public toilets opposite the post office. Leaking pipes will be fixed, the walls will be painted and tiles will be installed.
Mbongeni Nhlapho, queue marshall at the Glencoe taxi rank, said that staff members as well as members of the public are pleased with the upgrades, and thank the municipality for considering their hygiene needs.
