Update: Police seize weapon that killed toddler

An inquest is being investigated at this stage

The firearm involved in the shooting of a toddler at a residence in Limit Hill on Sunday morning has been seized by police.

3-year-old Siyavuya Mcwenga Mthi somehow found his father’s licensed 9mm firearm while searching for sweets in his parents’ bedroom, and started playing with the gun. This had tragic consequences, with the little boy accidentally shooting himself in the face.

Siyavuya died at the scene.

Police are currently trying to determine how the child had access to the weapon, and an inquest is being investigated.

The firearm will be sent for ballistics testing.

At the time of the incident, the mother was in the kitchen and the father was not at home.
