As we head into the festive season, police have noticed a crime trend relating to a scam that reared its ugly head during the last festive season. It seems that the scam is beginning to do its rounds again this year in the Ladysmith area.
The scam works like this: An old man approaches people who have just come out of a bank. He will then convincingly appeal to them to give him a lift, usually to deliver a few boxes at a mall or shopping complex in the town area. The man offers to provide compensation for the lift. Once in the vehicle, he requests that a friend be picked up, usually to help with the delivery.
The friend is always at a convenient location, usually on the way to the destination. Once the second person is in the vehicle, the driver is held at gunpoint and ordered to drive to a quiet location. Once there, he / she is robbed of their money and any other valuables.
Police warn the community to be wary of this type of scam. Always bear in mind that you can easily become a target once you have finished with your transaction at a financial institution, so always make a speedy departure from the area. Stay alert, do not linger, or allow yourself to be distracted by anyone. Your personal safety is of paramount importance.
If you happen to feel unsafe or notice you are being followed, immediately walk into a shop, raise the alarm, ask for help and call the police station. If you are driving and notice you are being followed, make your way to the nearest police station.
