A brutal murder was committed at 131 Welsh Road last week. Neil Morrison was found dead in his home on Friday after neighbours noticed his gate left open and he did not respond to calls. Mr Morrison, believed to be in his 50’s, lived alone and according to a neighbour had no family living in South Africa.

Next-door neighbour LeRoy Gericke told the Estcourt News that on Thursday afternoon Mr Morrison returned home after spending three weeks in hospital. “He was brought home by colleagues from his work who dropped him off at his gate before dark. That was the last time he was seen alive,” commented Mr Gericke. Around midday on Friday a neighbour became worried after his security gate was noticed open and there was no response from Mr Morrison after several calls.The neighbour reportedly alerted the Social Services Department whose officials were working with the deceased. These officials could not gain entry to the home and the police were called in.

“A police man climbed over the fence, found the back door broken open and found Mr Morrison dead on the floor just inside the front door,” said Mr Gericke. He added that police acted efficiently to secure the scene. It is believed that Mr Morrison was tied up and brutally beaten. Police spokesperson Captain JS Sokhela said that police were called to the scene at about 5pm.

“While inspecting the body it was found that the deceased had head injuries.
A case of murder has been opened and is under investigation,” he said. The motive for the killing is unknown and no arrests have been made. A memorial service for Mr Morrison will be held at St Matthew’s Anglican Church on Friday, November 28 at noon.
