Members have from November 2014 to April 2015 to renew their membership. After the cut-off date, all inactive memberships will be cancelled.
The Newcastle library is leading the pack with a new tech-savvy membership card system.
While it is commendable to be the first library in KwaZulu-Natal to implement the new smart card system, town librarian, Mrs Aletta Botes admits there are challenges.
“Since this is a new development, Newcastle Library Services will work closely with the Provincial Department of Arts and Culture and give as much feedback as possible to ensure teething problems are brought to their attention.” said Mrs Botes. “They will then be able to avoid such problems when rolling out the project at other libraries in KZN.”
A questionnaire will be provided to library users in order to establish how people feel about the new membership card system. Mrs Botes claimed that based on the challenges faced by Newcastle library, the roll-out of the system in other KZN libraries should be a whole lot smoother.
“The new membership card is a PVC card, whereas the previous card was merely a laminated piece of paper with a photograph of the patron.”
An electronic copy of the membership card is saved on the system, making it possible to reprint a new card without having to take a new photograph.
“It is important to stay in touch with community needs and new trends. This will form the basis for innovative service delivery. The constant development of technology is also a factor that will always be taken in consideration,” concluded Mrs Botes.
The following documentation is required for the application: your old membership card, Identity Document, birth certificate (only applicable to minors) and proof of residence.
