Counterfeit goods recovered

The team seized R300 000 worth of counterfeit goods from a single store

Crime Prevention Newcastle joined forces with Crime Intelligence to conduct a sting operation in Riverside Industrial Area on December 11.

The team seized R300 000 worth of counterfeit goods from a single store at around 12.30pm.

Police warned the community against purchasing counterfeit goods, sighting a worrying increase in the number of ‘knock-off” vendors in and around Newcastle.

In a similar operation earlier this year, police units recovered about R500 000 worth of counterfeit goods in the Central Business District alone.

According to section 1(a) of the Counterfeit Goods Act 37 of 1997, ‘counterfeiting’ is defined as “without the authority of the owner of any intellectual property right subsisting in the Republic in respect of protected goods, the manufacturing, producing or making, whether in the Republic or elsewhere, of any goods whereby those protected goods are imitated in such manner and to such a degree that those other goods are substantially identical copies of the protected goods.”

Anyone with information that may assist in the seizure of fraudulent goods is urged to contact police immediately.
