Police arrested a card-cloner on Saturday, December 20, while carrying out festive season operations in the Ladysmith CBD.
A group of people were involved in a commotion in Alexander Road and upon questioning the group, the officers found that they had been chasing after a man who had just used a cloned card at a nearby store.
As the man was leaving the store with his purchases of over R8000, the shop employees were notified that the card used by him had been cloned. They chased after the man, which was when the police stepped in.
Upon his arrest, the 38-year-old suspect was found to be in possession of six cloned bank cards.
The property purchased was returned to the store and the suspect was taken to police cells. Police are currently investigating the suspect’s link to other cases of this nature in Ladysmith, as well as across the province.
The suspect appeared briefly in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court on Monday, December 22, where he was remanded into custody.
He is set to appear in court again today (January 5) on fraud charges, as well as charges under the Electronic Communications Act.
