A suspected hijacker will be appearing in the Bergville Magistrate’s Court today (January 13) after police traced stolen property to the Ematsheni area and made an arrest. This after a truck was hijacked in Merrivale on Friday while travelling along the N3 freeway.
The suspects threatened the driver with a firearm and then bundled him into the cabin of the truck.
The suspects drove the truck, which was loaded with office furniture, to another destination, where they dropped off the cargo before releasing the driver at the Colenso off-ramp.
On Saturday, the Ladysmith Cluster Trio Crime Task Team traced the stolen property to the Ematsheni area following an around-the-clock investigation. The task team and Ematsheni police officers swooped on a shop near the Royal National Park, where they recovered the load of furniture.
A foreign national citizen was arrested and a large amount of cash was seized, along with false registration plates. The 23-year-old will be appearing in court today on charges of possession of stolen property.
The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, has applauded police for the arrest and the recovery of the goods. “We will not tolerate those who deal in stolen goods and we are appealing to members of the public not to buy these stolen items which are sold at extremely low prices and under very suspicious circumstances,” she said.
