Suspect arrested and firearms recovered

Police were successful in recovering an AK-47 assault rifle and a magazine containing 8 rounds of ammunition

The Ladysmith Tactical Response Team (TRT), together with Bergville police, swooped on a house in the Stulwane area of Bergville in the early hours of this morning (Friday).

They were following up on information about the possible location of unlicensed firearms.

On searching the premises, they were successful in recovering an AK-47 assault rifle and a magazine containing 8 rounds of ammunition. They also recovered a .38 revolver without any ammunition.

A 58-year-old suspect was taken into custody. He faces charges of being in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, and will appear in the Bergville Magistrate’s Court early next week.

The firearms will be sent away for ballistics testing to determine if they were used to commit crimes in the country.
