A suspect who escaped from the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court on February 16, and was re-arrested by the Pietermaritzburg K9 Unit, appeared in court again in Ladysmith last week.
The suspect, Siyabonga Mdunge, was facing charges of business robbery at the time of his escape.
Excellent tracing work and networking resulted in him being re-arrested by the PMB K9 Unit.
At the time of his arrest, he was in the process of fleeing the area.
Mdunge stood trial in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court at the end of last week, where he faced the charge of escaping from lawful custody.
Magistrate Francke found him guilty of the offence and handed down a sentence of 18 months’ imprisonment, of which 10 months is suspended for five years. Mdunge still has to face the business robbery charge and will be appearing in court again on Thursday, March 26, along with two other co-accused.
