Over 85kg of dagga was seized by Van Reenen police on Wednesday night last week while patrolling the N3.
The officers came across a white Toyota sedan with four male occupants who were acting rather suspiciously. They stopped the vehicle, and a search turned up three bags containing loose dagga. All four suspects, aged between 23 and 57, were placed under arrest.
The dagga weighed in at around 87.8kg and has an estimated street value of about R100,000.
The suspects appeared briefly in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court on Thursday on charges of being in possession of dagga. The case was remanded until April 21.
Provincial Commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, commended the work done by the officers to get rid of drugs in the community. “We will continue with our operation to make sure all those who break the law are caught,” she said.
