A man was arrested by K9 Unit officers on Tuesday after 22 lengths of steel railway line were found concealed on the back of his bakkie.
Warrant Officer J Meyer and Warrant Officer CHJ Steenkamp of the Ladysmith Dog (K9) Unit were carrying out crime prevention activities on Tuesday when they noticed a bakkie in Thompson Road. The vehicle’s bin was covered with a tarpaulin and a person near the vehicle was acting suspiciously, so they stopped to inspect the vehicle.
As they did so, the man ran off. He was chased and apprehended. Police found a set of keys, among other items, in his possession. He was brought back to the bakkie and under the tarp, they discovered 22 lengths of railway line (steel). The keys in his pocket were for the bakkie.
The 24-year-old suspect was unable to account for the steel in his possession and was placed under arrest. His vehicle was seized as evidence.
Investigation into the find continues and the suspect appeared in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court yesterday (Thursday) on charges of possession of suspected stolen property.
