Driver and pedestrian killed on N3

"It is alleged that the pedestrian was run over by many cars and trucks to such an extent that it is difficult to identify whether this pedestrian was a male or female"

A pedestrian and truck driver, lost their lives on the N3 southbound near Wagendrift Dam on Saturday evening. Investigations thus far have established that the pedestrian was knocked over and lying on the slow lane. An approaching truck driver noticed the body and attempted to swerve to avoid driving over the pedestrian but in the process collided with a truck on the fast lane.

This truck veered off the road and overturned. The truck driver was killed instantly and an entrapped passenger was removed from the vehicle and treated for minor injuries. The load of cattle feed was strewn across the highway, which had to be closed from 7.30pm when the accident was reported until 5.30am on Sunday, April 12. Vehicles were diverted from the Wembezi Flyover, into Estcourt and onto the N3 via Midway.

Police are now trying to identify the pedestrian, whose body was severely injured. “It is alleged that the pedestrian was run over by many cars and trucks to such an extent that it is difficult to identify whether this pedestrian was a male or female,” commented police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel TM Mabaso.

“At this point the police are trying to locate the relatives of as well as use fingerprints to identify the deceased. “No arrests have been made and the matter is under investigation,” she added.
