A truck driver and his crew member are lucky to be alive after three armed suspects confronted them at Ultra City on Friday. A police report states that the driver and passenger, whilst proceeding to Johannesburg, stopped at Shell Ultra City to utilise the ablution facilities.

The driver stayed in the truck, while the passenger went to the toilet. Whilst waiting, the driver was suddenly confronted by three unknown males who parked their vehicle in front of the truck. The suspects pointed firearms at the driver before one gained entry to the truck, pushed the driver aside and attempted to start the truck.

When this failed, the other two suspects also entered the truck and demanded cash. R2 000 and a cell phone, which was on the dashboard were taken. When the crew member returned from the bathroom, he noticed suspicious activity in the truck and approached with caution but he was noticed by the suspects who fired at him and fled the scene.

The passenger sustained a gunshot wound to his leg. “The Estcourt police and ambulance were summoned to the scene of the crime. A case was opened and the victim was taken to hospital for medical attention. The motive behind this incident is unknown at this stage and no arrests have been made. The case is still under investigation,” commented police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel TM Mabaso.
