4 arrested after stealing cash from elderly man

The four offered to count the pensioner’s money for him and while doing so, stole some of the money

Elandslaagte police arrested four suspects on Friday after they allegedly stole money from a 65-year-old pensioner.

On March 13, the pensioner was at a pension pay-out point in the Enkunzi area when he was approached by vendors selling traditional medicine. The four offered to count the pensioner’s money for him and while doing so, stole some of the money.

A case of theft was opened for investigation and on Friday last week, the four were arrested. They are set to appear in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court today (Monday) on charges of theft.

Unfortunately, there are unscrupulous individuals in the community who prey on the elderly. Therefore, elderly residents are advised to be wary of offers of help from others, especially strangers.

It is also advisable for you to ask someone you trust to accompany you to a pension pay-out point.

These hints from the SAPS are supplied in the interests of safeguarding our elderly residents.
