In the interests of keeping the community safe, Ladysmith police would like to advise the community about a cash scam that is once again doing the rounds in the CBD.
One morning last week, a man walking in the CBD became the victim of this scam.
The resident came across a woman picking up what looked to be a large amount of cash lying on the ground. The woman offered the man a share of the cash, as long as he was willing to go to a secluded area where the cash could be shared between them.
The resident was asked to accompany her and he willingly did so. As they were on their way to share the ‘find’, a white VW Polo with ND registration plates drove up to them.
The four occupants pretended to be policemen and ordered the resident into the vehicle. He was then taken out of town, along the Bluebank Road, where he was robbed of his valuables.
Police are advising the community to stay clear of this type of scam.
If you see “packets of money” lying in the street, leave the area immediately and contact the police. Whatever you do, don’t pick up the money.
Do not allow yourself to become engaged in conversation with anyone you see picking up a bundle or packet of money, as they are usually part of the scam and their job is to lure you to a secluded area or a waiting vehicle, where the rest of the scam artists can rob you. Needless to say, do not leave the area with the individual and do not meet up with them at a secluded area, as you are putting yourself and your property at risk.
