On Saturday at approximately 6:30am, members from the Provincial Crime Intelligence, Special Task Force, National Intervention Unit, Provincial Tracking Team the Air wing and assisted by the SANDF Air Force recovered six unlicensed firearms in Kranskop and arrested two suspects aged 61 and 73.
Members from Provincial Crime Intelligence received information of a homestead with firearms at Mphise area in Kranskop which were being hired out to criminals. The homestead was identified and an information driven operation was planned. Due to the rough terrain of the area, air support was summoned together with members who were on the ground. Members proceeded to the targeted homestead and when they searched the house the recovered six unlicensed firearms, two 303 rifles with six live rounds , one G3 Rifle with 3 live rounds , one 308 with five live rounds and one 9mm shot with six live rounds. This is the same area where Nhlanhleni Nzama who was wanted for the murder of two policemen in Johannesburg was arrested.
Two suspects were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and will appear in the Kranskop Magistrates’ Court today.
“I want to assure the community that we will continue to root out criminals in our society and will continue to tighten the screws on criminals,” said The Provincial Commissioner of Police in KwaZulu-Natal, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni. The recovered firearms will be taken to ballistics to ascertain if they were used in any commission of the crime in the country.
