A 14-year-old boy was shot in the leg at a residence in the Wasbank area outside Ladysmith on Monday morning.
It is alleged that a friend of the family went to visit and left the firearm in the bedroom. The boy was playing with the gun and it went off accidentally, shooting him in the thigh.
ER24 paramedics arrived and were ushered into one of the bedrooms, where they found the teenager in a serious condition.
They treated him for his injuries, as well as providing him with advanced life support.
Once stabilised, the patient was transported to hospital for further treatment. Local authorities were contacted for further investigation.
The boy is still in hospital in a stable condition.
