A father and son were on their way home when they were forced off the road in the Pieters area by unknown heavily-armed gunmen and ambushed in what is described as a “military style” attack yesterday (Friday) afternoon.
Shots were fired and empty bullet casings were scattered all over the roadway. The attack left an elderly businessman in critical condition. The businessman’s son (the driver) was killed.
Sharaj Ambulance Services’ intensive care unit was dispatched, as well as an EMRS rapid response vehicle. Upon arrival, paramedics found a critically injured patient lying outside a vehicle and immediately stabilised him before transporting him to a local hospital.
The driver of the vehicle had succumbed to his injuries and was declared deceased at the scene.
Colenso police, Ladysmith TRT and local breakdown services also responded.
The motive for the attack is unknown at this stage and police will be investigating. No arrests have yet been made.
