The various Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Units in KwaZulu-Natal have a profound reason to celebrate the results they have achieved during investigation of various sexual-related offences in KwaZulu-Natal over the last month.
From April 1 to 30, the units arrested a total of 349 suspects for sexual-related offences that include kidnapping, assault, domestic violence, sexual assault, robbery, attempted murder, house breaking and theft, abduction and rape cases. During the same period, 51 suspects were convicted by various courts in the province after they were found guilty of sexual related offences. Six life sentences and a total of 412 years’ imprisonment were handed down by courts during the past month.
Management at the FCS Units welcomed the fact that maximum sentences were handed down in most cases and that justice was delivered to the victims.
KZN Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, applauded these successes and expressed her appreciation to the judicial system, which has meted out fitting sentences to these rapists. “The sentences handed down will send a clear message to like-minded, would-be offenders that police will trace, arrest and successfully prosecute them. KwaZulu-Natal police will endeavour with all their resources to prevent crimes against women and children and make the province a safer place for everyone,” she said.
