2 men arrested for possession of illegal firearms

Two separate houses were searched and two rifles and ammunition were recovered on Friday evening

An intelligence-driven operation by Ladysmith Crime Intelligence and Ladysmith TRT was held recently in the Colenso area and resulted in the recovery of two firearms and the arrest of two suspects.

Two separate houses were searched and two rifles and ammunition were recovered on Friday evening.

In the first house, a .223 calibre hunting rifle with five rounds of ammunition was recovered and a 25-year-old man was arrested. Later the same night, a second house was searched. A .303 hunting rifle and six rounds of ammunition were recovered and a 32-year-old man was arrested.

Further investigation in the area uncovered 176 live rounds hidden away.

Both men face charges of being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

They appeared in the Colenso Magistrate’s Court on Monday last week, where they were remanded into custody until their next court appearance, which will be tomorrow (Tuesday, May 19).

The firearms will be sent for ballistic tests to establish if they were used in the commission of any crime in the country.
