
A suspect has been arrested for the murder of prominent businessman Mr Aboobaker Omarjee, who traded for a number of decades in the Driefontein area.
Mr Omarjee was shot and killed in what is suspected to be an attempted robbery on the afternoon of Tuesday, April 28. He and his son were travelling back to Ladysmith and while dropping off staff members, they came under fire by unknown gunmen.
Mr Omarjee Snr later died of a gunshot wound.
Police subsequently made an appeal to the public for assistance, with the case docket being investigated by Elandslaagte detectives. They received valuable information and on Thursday, May 14, a 22-year-old man was taken in for questioning.
The suspect was charged and has since appeared in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court. He was remanded into custody pending further investigations and is due to make a bail application on Wednesday in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court.
Detectives are hard at work tracing the suspects who are still at large.
