Boy falls into open manhole
Passersby heard faint cries for help, as the boy was trapped and couldn’t get out
A 13-year-old boy fell into a manhole near the Islamic Educational Centre (IEC) while on the way to evening prayers on Monday last week. The open manhole has an almost three-metre drop.
Passersby heard faint cries for help, as the boy was trapped and couldn’t get out by himself.
The injured youngster was helped out of the manhole by Bila Sader, Dr Sader and Yusuf Khan. The boy was covered in blood and was immediately rushed to hospital, where he was treated for a fractured arm and ribs, and torn ligaments. He also had to have four stitches to his mouth, where he was cut during the fall.
The boy’s family would like to thank all who helped him out of the dangerous hole. “If it hadn’t been for them, he could have gotten even more injured trying to get out by himself,” said a thankful family member.
Children who walk in the area of the IEC should be wary of this hole and be careful not to fall in.
The manhole was covered after the boy was helped out. The people who came to the boy’s assistance covered the open hole with a piece of board. They also put rocks on top of the board to anchor it in place and make sure no one else falls in and seriously injures themselves.
The boy’s name has been withheld as he is a minor.
