EFF member laid to rest peacefully

There was a heavy police presence at the funeral as police were expecting a disgruntled crowd

A young man who was killed during the land claims riot was laid to rest this past weekend.

Simo Hadebe (21), an EFF member, was buried at Colley Street Cemetery following the Dundee Vryheid Road violence on August 23.

There was a heavy police presence at the funeral as police were expecting a disgruntled crowd.

According to Communications Officer, Captain Mbense, everything went well and there were no disruptions.

Mr Hadebe was fatally shot above his left eye, yet it is still unclear whether it was a rubber bullet or a real bullet that killed him.

Police are investigating the matter.

He died on the morning of August 24 in Madadeni Hospital after he was transferred from Dundee Provincial Hospital.

Police and security officials used rubber bullets to disperse a crowd of several hundred following an attempt by EFF supporters to ‘grab land’ below Talana Museum.

Protesters said the rampage followed after three people had been shot at by security officers.

Stones were thrown at passing motorists and the Dundee Vryheid Road was closed for several hours.

A man and a woman, Sibusiso Mazibuko and Ntombizonke Dladla, were arrested for public violence and appeared in court on August 25.

They were both granted bail and will next appear on September 3.
