Support the Gandhi peace walk

It would be a fitting tribute to the great man by showing your support towards the 14-day historic walk

The countdown to the Gandhi Peace Walk from Gauteng to Durban has officially begun and with just a few days left, the Rising Sun Community Newspapers (part of Caxton Community Newspapers), together with the Gandhi Development Trust, will be walking from Johannesburg to Durban.

They will be starting at the Rising Sun Lenasia office in Johannesburg on September 19 and grandly conclude at the Mahatma Gandhi Informal Settlement in Inanda, Durban, on October 2, which also commemorates Gandhi’s remembrance birthday.

The walkers will leave Dundee on Saturday morning, September 26, arriving in Ladysmith shortly after 3pm. They will be joined by Ladysmith Gazette staff and SDS temple members 5 kilometres outside of town, opposite Naunton’s. They will be escorted into town. Anyone wanting to join the Gazette team are more than welcome.

On Sunday morning, September 27, we will (together with the SDS team) walk them 5 kilometres out of town.

Mahatma Gandhi was undoubtedly a man of note, who made an indelible mark in history by being the preeminent leader of the Indian independence movement in British-ruled India. It would be a fitting tribute to the great man by showing your support towards the 14-day historic walk. Supporting an event of this magnitude certainly keeps true to the fundamentals of social obligation and community upliftment.

For the men and women participating in the walk – which will highlight non-violence, peace and reconciliation – it will be long and hard, and supporting them is a worthy cause!

Do not forget that you can also support this event by sponsoring a leg of the race. Residents can sponsor R10 per kilometre as well. All proceeds raised will be donated to the Gandhi Development Trust. Those who require any additional information on the 2015 Gandhi Peace Walk are more than welcome to send an email to vijaym@risingsunprinters.co.za
