Water restrictions still in place despite rain

KZN MEC for CoGTA Nomsa Dube declared KZN a drought stricken province during the early months of 2015. Suffice it to say, the situation has not improved in recent months, therefore causing water restrictions not to subside, despite the fact that we have experienced some rainfall lately in most parts of the Uthukela District.

As we sit, currently, Spioenkop Dam, which is now the sole supplier of water to the Ladysmith area, is at 48%. However, while that sounds promising, the Klipriver has almost totally dried up. We are only pumping 78c/h and still lack 12m3, which is required on a daily basis. The public, therefore, should be aware that water restrictions cannot be alleviated at this juncture.

Furthermore, the situation will worsen should we not receive sufficient rainfall during this summer season to replenish our rivers and dams.

Car washes, filling up of swimming pools, use of sprinkler systems and the watering of gardens will still have restrictions until further notice.

“The public should bear with us as we try our utmost best to manage the situation,” say uThulela.

The situation remains critical and communities are therefore also requested and advised to use water sparingly during this trying period of drought. People are encouraged to store water in containers once they have running water and also harvest rain water when it rains. This will assist in terms of having enough water in the household in times of unexpected water cuts.
