The increase in councillor salary upper limits was briefly discussed last Thursday.

After welcoming council members back for another year, Speaker, Mandla Zikhali allowed political parties to agree or decline a 5,5 per cent increase.

This was welcomed by parties overall.

National Freedom Party (NFP) councilman, Sibusiso Lukhele lauded his peers for speaking with a unified voice and mind.

On a somewhat positive note, the first Special Council meeting for 2016 drew to a close.

The proposed increase will now be submitted to the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) for approval, increasing or even decreasing.

Councillors said the meeting itself was purely a formality.

“The increase has to be submitted to provincial Government for approval in July.”

This is when the budget process comes into effect.
