We take a look at ten ways in which you as a parent can help your child succeed greatly in their school years.
1. Know the teachers:
It’s highly important to know who your childs teachers are. Let them know you want to help with your child’s development wherever you can, and that they can contact you whenever there might be a problem during school times. You should also get to know the office staff and the principal as well.
2. Attend parent-teacher meetings:
Parent evenings are the best way to find out how your child is coping with school work. This also gives you the time to address concerns with their teachers.
3. Sign them up for extra classes:
If you or a teacher feels your child might be falling behind in class or battling with certain subjects, extra tutoring classes will be a huge benefit as it will help improve their grades.
4. Homework is important:
So you had a long rough day at work, and you’re not really in the mood to do anything except relax? Tough cookies – your child needs at least an hour of your time to assist him/her with homework. They will not only appreciate the help, but the attention as well.
5. Education can be fun:
Luckily, children are easily persuaded. Teach your child that learning can be very fun and they should enjoy every moment of school. Let them know as well that with hard work comes great rewards.
6. Limit TV, games and internet time:
Children these days seem like they were born technically equipped. It’s PC games, PlayStations, cell phones and TV shows. This needs to stop! Limit their tech times and make sure they spend more time studying and doing their homework.
7. Communicate with your child:
Children appreciate it when their parents are interested in their daily life. This also builds the foundation of trust between a parent and child. Ask them how their day was or if anything exciting happened. This way you will also know if there is anything you need to be concerned with.
8. Teach them the correct life skills:
Respect and discipline are the key factors to success. Teach your child to respect their teachers and classmates. They will have a better perspective on school and it will show in their grades.
9. Encourage reading:
Reading is very important and you should encourage your child to read as often as they can. Also, make sure they understand what they are reading about. The more knowledge they take in, the better their grades will be.
10. Set reasonable standards:
As a parent, you have high expectations and it’s good to set high standards for your child. However, make sure the standards are reasonable and won’t break your child down instead of building them up. It’s also really important to make sure you are involved and supportive of your child.
