Burned victim finds refuge at La Gratitude

When Protection Services attended to a house fire call in Manila Street, Paradise, firemen initially could not find any visible sign of a blaze. Upon closer inspection, the remains of a fire were evident.

NEWCASTLE – Survivor of a house fire, Shanitha Maharaj is picking up the pieces of her life, after her invalid husband, Dhaya Maharaj died in their Paradise home on July 17, following the fire.

When Protection Services attended to a house fire call in Manila Street, Paradise, firemen initially could not find any visible sign of a blaze. Upon closer inspection, the remains of a fire were evident.

According to, Mrs Maharaj the fire broke out on July 16.

Mrs Maharaj was treated for her burns at the Madadeni Provincial Hospital, and subsequently moved to La Gratitude.

Farieda Mia of Newcastle Child Welfare, together with the Department of Social Development, acquired residence for Mrs Maharaj after her traumatic ordeal.

Newcastillians opened their hearts and generously delivered non-perishable and household items to the Newcastle Advertiser offices to be donated to Mrs Maharaj.

Overwhelmed, she gratefully received these items at La Gratitude as she settles into her new abode.
