VRYHEID’S unsung heroes gathered behind Karnallie Kleuterskool last Wednesday to put on a show for the children.

With the focus more on education than entertainment, a fake accident scene was set up in the open field behind Karnallie to demonstrate the roles of emergency workers, police and law enforcement in the daily lives of the community.

JVS Towing’s Chris Marais was instrumental in the organisation of the demonstration, bringing together members of KwaZulu Private Ambulance, Vryheid K9 Unit, Vryheid SAPS, traffic officials and Vryheid Neighbourhood Watch in a combined effort to provide the children with a deeper respect and understanding of the importance of these services.

The children witnessed the sequence of events that would generally play out in a motor vehicle accident, starting with the response of emergency medical rescue technicians and treatment of patients, to the removal of the crashed vehicle from the accident scene.

The children were in for a special treat when Captain Gary Stride from the Vryheid K9 Unit introduced the law enforcement agents of the furry, four-legged kind, demonstrating their keen abilities to detect hidden objects and chase down perpetrators.
