Update: Enraged mob set police vehicle on fire

The terrified officer fled the scene

Yesterday afternoon (September 25), a police vehicle travelling along Helpmekaar Road hit a pedestrian just before the St Chad’s turn-off.

Ambulances were called out to the scene and when they arrived, they found that the pedestrian was already dead.

An angry mob started putting rocks in the road, blocking off all traffic. The rocks and stones were packed tightly together to build up a small wall was so that no vehicle could pass. Other rocks were scattered in the road, forcing those who wished to pass to drive off the road.

Community members allegedly stoned the police vehicle and set it alight, causing the terrified officer to flee the scene.

Mortuary personnel, SAPS and EMS responded to the scene.
