Water update: Police say workers need to lay charges before they can act

The mayor's office has not responded to queries regarding the issue

According to police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele, following reports of protest action at the Ezakheni Pump Station, police were deployed to the area but found that there was no one at the plant.

“It has since been determined that the workers were allegedly intimidated into shutting down the plant near Ladysmith and as a result, no one is on duty there,” explained Colonel Mbhele.

At this time, the workers are unwilling to open cases regarding the matter. Neither has uThukela Municipality opened any cases.

Police have called on the assistance of local tribal authorities and other government departments to help resolve the issue.

The mayor’s office has not responded to queries regarding the issue.

A press release by uThukela warned that the following areas – Ezakheni (Sections A to E), Pieters industrial area, Mthandi, Acaciavale, Smartiesville, Aloe Park, Leonardsville and other sections of Steadville – will remain without water for at least the next 48 hours.
