Medical waste illegally dumped

It is believed there is a short cut near the bridge, where the needles and syringes were illegally disposed of

About a week ago a very concerned local noticed that used needles and syringes have been dumped under the railway bridge.

The bridge is located at the top of Connor Street as you approach the Hillside Shopping Centre. It is believed there is a short cut near the bridge, where the needles and syringes were illegally disposed of.

The littering of these items is a great threat to those who come in close contact with it. The needles can easily go unnoticed at night. The health risk this poses is extremely high. The police have been made aware of the unhygienic dumping under the bridge.

“It’s an alarming situation to find this equipment dumped so close to a residential area and near a foot path used daily,” expressed a concerned resident.

Parents need to urge their children not to play with or pick up items such as blades, shaving razors and needles. Needles and syringes are meant to be destroyed without having any harmful effect on human health and the environment.
If you witness anyone dumping medical waste in and around town contact the police on 036 342 9525.
