Born in Pietermaritzburg, Natasha Mahabeer is an enthusiastic paramedic who was fascinated by the idea of saving lives at a tender age.

Having moved to Ladysmith 10 years ago with her father Rajesh Mahabeer, who is the owner of Sharaj Ambulance Services, Natasha has since been in love with the idea of being a paramedic.

The pair moved up to Ladysmith to open a paramedic college. Two years down the line, her father decided he would also open up an ambulance service that is now well-known in Ladysmith and its surrounds.

This, of course, is Sharaj Ambulance Services, which has gone a long way in helping the injured and sick, and is highly recommended by the people it has served.

As soon as Natasha matriculated, she decided she would follow in her father’s footsteps and save people’s lives.

“As a child, I would always watch my dad putting on his paramedic gear. I was 16 years old when I volunteered for a first-aid course,” says Natasha. After her first first-aid case, Natasha says she embraced the fact that she had saved a life and realised she had the passion to be a paramedic. “My dad has always been my inspiration. It was through him that I was inspired to become a paramedic,” says this heroine.

Fondly known as ‘Tash’, not only is she a paramedic but also a facilitator in first-aid, HIV/Aids, fire-fighting and health & safety.

As a woman, she doesn’t mind going out in the middle of the night to save lives.

“I have been in practice for 12 long years now and I love every second of it. Nothing brings me more joy than knowing I have done whatever is in my power to save someone’s life; it is the greatest thing ever!” she enthuses.

On the down-side, she explains that there are difficult times as well, such as when children are involved in an accident.

Natasha encourages everyone who wishes to be a paramedic to do it out of love and passion. “You need to be passionate and eager to help people. You also need to be on your toes, as this is a fast-paced job. Do it out of sheer love!” concludes Natasha.
