House robbery gang arrested

Various items including jewellery and house break-in implements were recovered from the men

A robbing spree came to a crashing end for four men who were chased and arrested by police on the N3. The four suspects, driving a white Mercedes Benz, were spotted by several residents in Estcourt on Thursday while they drove around residential areas.

Seeing an opportunity, they stopped at a home in Dahlia Road. A resident from the home said that he watched as one of the suspects tampered with a vehicle outside.

“I called out to my daughter loudly, telling her to bring my gun. This alerted the man that someone was watching,” related the resident.

By this time two suspects were in the yard but fled when they heard voices.

Minutes later the suspects struck again in Bougainvillea Avenue and First Avenue.

“On November 24 four suspects broke into a house in First Avenue. The occupants from the house fled, calling for help. The suspects became spooked and then fled in a vehicle without taking anything,” explained police spokesperson Captain Charmaine Struwig.

The suspects headed towards the N3 and by now various police units were alerted and were on the lookout for them. It is alleged that the men stopped in Howick where another home was robbed. The vehicle was then spotted on the N3 travelling towards Pietermaritzburg.

This was when police pounced and the men were apprehended. Various items including jewellery and house break-in implements were recovered from the men. The men were arrested.

Estcourt police will investigate further to determine whether the suspects may or may not have been those involved in the attempted house robbery in Estcourt,” added Captain Struwig.
