‘Hikers’ get the thumbs down
Travelers beware. You may no longer thumb a lift in this area.

HITCHHIKING has officially been given the ‘thumbs down’ near the corner of Deputation and Church Streets.
Red lines were painted along this stretch of Vryheid’s busy main street to discourage motorists from picking up passengers at this popular hitchhiking spot, following alleged intimidation tactics by taxi drivers not keen to lose out on their potential profits to good Samaritans looking to offer lifts to their potential clientele.
It seems, however, that the red lines were not enough to indicate that this is now a ‘no stopping’ area for motorists, and a sign was erected recently to visibly drive this point home. Not only are motorists forbidden to stop here and can be fined for doing so, but the sign clearly states that no hiking is permitted on this spot.
Travelers beware. You may no longer thumb a lift in this area.
