Saziso celebrates her 107th birthday

At the mind-blowing age of 107 years, Brig. Luhlongwana is thought to be Vryheid’s oldest community member.

BORN on January 25, 1910, Brig. Saziso Luhlongwana may be one of the very few people in town to have been alive during both the first and second world wars.

At the mind-blowing age of 107 years, Brig. Luhlongwana is thought to be Vryheid’s oldest community member.

Brig. Luhlongwana is a proud member of the local Salvation Army who commenced her ministry in 1930 and was appointed to lead several congregations before her retirement in 1970.

“Only my left eye can still see and I have to use a walking stick to get from one point to another,” said Brig. Luhlongwana.

On Monday, January 23, members of the Salvation Army church Major Kidiemetse Jwili, Lieutenant Zama Shelembe and the  chairman of the ANC in Ward 13, Mkhanyiseli Mhlongo, visited Mrs Luhlongwana to show her some love, sing happy birthday and share a slice of cake with her.

A very lively soul, Brig. Luhlongwana talked fondly of times past when she was still in the leadership of the church.

“Oh, I miss those times so much!” she exclaimed as she shared memories of all the congregations she witnessed being launched.

Brig. Luhlongwana has 8 children, 35 grandchildren, 67 great-grandchildren, and 18 great-great grandchildren.

Asked about what her secret was for having lived this long, she said that she always bore in mind that the bible said that one should respect their elders and that by so doing, their days on earth would be prolonged.

The local Salvation Army Church would like to say a very happy birthday to Brig. Luhlongwana and thank her for being a wonderful blessing to them all.
