A job scam is fleecing desperate job seekers out of R1 000 as they hope to get work at Buffalo Coal.

Kevern Mattison, Buffalo Coal’s General Manager, said several people had arrived at the mine today – both at Coalfields and at Magdalena Colliery – saying that they had received a SMS, claiming that Buffalo Coal was offering jobs and applicants need to pay R1 000 into a Pep Stores account and ask to speak to a Mr Gideon at the mine.

“We have not advertised for any jobs and certainly would never ask applicants to deposit money.  This is a scam.  Our Gideon at the mine knows nothing of this and we are surprised to find that this SMS has been circulated,” Mr Mattison warned.  It is also believed that the account has nothing to do with Pep Stores.  The disappointed job hunters were turned away and have been told to open charges with the police.

Last year the Courier reported on a job scam that also took money from would-be job hunters involving Springlake Colliery.  Never pay money into account when applying for a job.

The SMS reads as follows:

Buffalo Coal is a high quality thermal and metallurgical coal producer with operations in Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa.
The two operating mines, Magdalena and Aviemore, have substantial coal resources, and the Company supplies thermal coal, anthracite and calcine into both domestic and export markets.
We have open vacancies in our two coalfields.

Candidates applying must be at least 3 years experienced, medically fit, Able to work overtime, sober habits, group communication skills, relevant mining experience will be advantageous.
