WARNING: Suspected tropical disturbance to hit the coast of SA this week

According to the South African Weather Service, if the storm intensifies it could be classified as a moderate tropical storm named Dineo.

NEWCASTLE – Storm Report SA claimed a tropical disturbance could hit the Mozambique Channel, and possibly affect other areas along the South African coast, this week.

According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), if the storm intensifies it could be classified as a moderate tropical storm named Dineo.

“All forecasts are subject to change as the weather can change without a moment’s notice. We cannot guarantee that this forecast will stay the same.”

Heavy rains to extreme eastern parts of the country owing to the system-making landfall, are expected. However these systems are extremely hard to predict.

It further stated a tropical cyclone was characterised by high rainfall that could result in floods. The storm winds also give rise to high waves and swells of up to 12 metres which can cause severe damage to coastal towns.

On Monday, information received on NASA’s hurricane website was picked up by Storm Report SA and SAWS said the storm was currently passing over the Mozambique Channel.

“Weather conditions in the Mozambique Channel continue to be hot and humid‚ with light winds in the atmosphere‚ whilst sea-surface temperatures exceed 30 degree celsius over the eastern part of this region. These are all favourable ingredients for the growth and intensification of tropical lows.”

Moderate tropical storms are associated with high wind speeds.

By the time it reaches the north-eastern parts of South Africa on Thursday evening‚ it is likely to result in heavy rains and flooding.

“Whilst much rainfall can be expected for southern Mozambique as well as parts of South Africa later in the week‚ the system itself will‚ in all probability‚ dissipate within 36 to 48 hours of moving inland.”
