Suspect arrested for the assault of a police officer

The suspect has since appeared in the Newcastle Magistrate's Court on charges of assault with the intent of causing grievous bodily harm.

NEWCASTLE –  29-year-old man was arrested for assaulting and injuring a Newcastle police officer on January 27.

SAPS Corporate Communications and Liaison Officer, Lizzy Arumugam said the officer had to be hospitalised after the assault to be treated for severe injuries to the face and mouth.

“The officer has since been released from hospital and resumed duties once again,” she said.

The suspect has since appeared in the Newcastle Magistrate’s Court on charges of assault with the intent of causing grievous bodily harm.

However, the outcome was not available at the time of going to print.

Mrs Arumugam said Newcastle SAPS regarded the offence in a serious light. The perpetrator was wrong in assaulting the officer as he was only executing his duties in terms of the Criminal Procedure Act, upholding the constitution of the country.

“SAPS will not tolerate such misconduct from any member of the community. People should think twice before obstructing the law because it is a crime and offenders will be punished accordingly,” she concluded.
