An unsuspecting woman from the Bergville area was scammed out of money after receiving a call last week from a person who pretended to be the ward councillor from her area.
She was told that the call was from a specific department where she held an account.
She was informed that her installment had changed and that she needed to make a deposit into a specific bank account to rectify the problem pertaining to her account. She was quoted a bank account number, and the woman did as she was told.

The victim later found out that she had been scammed out of her cash.
Police are warning the public to be aware of this type of scam. Do not deposit monies into bank accounts if you have not first confirmed with the department or company concerned that there has been a change to an account number or a contract.
When receiving telephone calls from agents, always be wary of what you agree to; don’t make immediate deposits without first verifying that the person is who they say they are. As far as possible, request proof and verify banking details before making any deposits into accounts.
