A housebreaker was caught in the act this afternoon (March 3) in Tanjore Road.
A middle-aged woman who owns the house where the break-in occurred received a distress call from her neighbour, who heard loud banging noises coming from the backyard and asked if she had anybody working at her house. She didn’t have anybody working there.
The woman was not at home at the time; she was still at work. She quickly contacted NN Alarms and notified them of a suspected house robbery in progress at her home and that she was making her way home from work.
When she got home, NN Alarms officers were already there. She quickly opened the gate and they went into the yard. They noticed that the front security gate was wide open and also that the main gate was slightly ajar and the lock broken.

The NN Alarms reaction unit officer went to the back of the house and found a man trying to break the locks and doors to gain access to the house. The homeowner quickly ran to the front yard and closed the gate.
The reaction unit officer told the man to stand still and get on the ground, but he did not. The suspected robber lunged at the reaction unit officer and the officer had to use force to apprehend him.

4 doors and locks were broken, but the suspected robber did not gain access to the house due to the quick thinking of the heroic reaction unit officers. The reaction unit officer pinned the man to the ground and waited for the Ladysmith Dog Unit and police officers to arrive at the scene.
The man, believed to be in his 20s, was arrested by police.
Nothing was taken from the house, but damages were sustained to the value of about R7000.
