THE late Terry Pratchett once wrote of a “special type of thief” in his Discworld novel, Sourcery.
“This thief was an artist of theft,” he wrote. “Other thieves merely stole everything that was not nailed down, but this thief stole the nails as well.”
A seemingly similar type of thievery struck under cover of darkness on Tuesday night, when thieves boldly entered Vryheid Cemetery, believed to be travelling in what may have been a flat bed truck, and proceeded to brazenly steal an entire freight container from right under the nose of the security guard on duty at the time.

Groundskeeper, Bertie Slabbert, reported the incident the following morning when he arrived at the scene and discovered that the container, which was being used as a storage facility at the time, had been surreptitiously swiped from its spot at the graveyard.
When he questioned the security guard who had been on duty at the time of the theft, the guard could not offer much of a description of the vehicle or its occupants, despite the fact that they allegedly conversed with him, explaining that he had not thought of taking down a vehicle registration or requesting identification from the perpetrators. It is believed at this time, that the security guard may have somehow assumed that the criminals were municipal workers.
A case of theft has been opened at Vryheid Police Station.
