Update: Senior Ladysmith municipal official arrested and now out on bail

It is believed that the municipal official has sent through a resignation letter to the municipality

A senior official of Alfred Duma Local Municipality  is out on bail after being arrested by police.

The town’s Municipal Valuer (Finance Department), Mr Eliah Ganja, was arrested and charged for being an illegal immigrant.

He made his second appearance in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court on Thursday (May 18) for a formal bail application and was granted bail of R1000.

It is believed that the suspect is a foreigner whose paperwork for being in the country was not in order. According to a police source, he is illegally in the country.

The case was remanded to June 12 for further investigation.

It is further believed that the municipal official has sent through a resignation letter to the municipality.

At the time of going to press and despite informing the municipality that we were in fact aware of the arrest, the communication department refused to comment.
